Wix site still slow after the fixes? How to find the limit
Every website builder has a floor: a loading time that an almost empty page on that platform cannot beat, because the builder's own code loads on every page before any of your content does. If a Wix site is still slow after its media, fonts and apps have been trimmed, measure that floor. A test page with one heading shows it in minutes.

Be sure the fixes are done
A limit can only be found once the avoidable weight has gone. Work through how to speed up a Wix website first: the top of the page, video, animations, fonts and third-party apps.
Measure the floor
The floor is found with a page that has almost nothing on it.
- Add a new page with one heading and one sentence. No images, no apps, no header video.
- In the page’s SEO settings, switch off indexing for that page, so that it stays out of Google.
- Publish the site.
- Run the new page through PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab, five times, and take the middle result.
- Note how long the main content took to appear.
That figure is the floor. No page on the site can load faster than a page with nothing on it. Delete the test page afterwards.
Compare it with three things
The floor means something only beside other figures.
- Your real pages. The gap between the floor and a real page is the cost of your content, and it can still be reduced.
- Google’s mark. A good page shows its main content within 2.5 seconds. A floor near that mark leaves no room for content at all.
- Your competitors’ pages. Test theirs the same way. If their real pages load faster than your empty one, trimming cannot close the gap.
What the result tells you
Three outcomes are possible, and each points one way.
- The floor is fast and your pages are slow. Keep trimming: the problem is on the pages.
- The floor is fast and your pages are close to it. Speed is not what is holding the site back, and the answer lies in content and links.
- The floor is slow, or slower than the competition. The platform is the limit, and no setting changes it.
Staying or rebuilding
Staying is reasonable when search is not where customers come from. Where it is, a site that cannot match its competitors’ speed starts every contest behind.
Wix states that a site built on its platform cannot be exported or hosted elsewhere, so the alternative to staying is a rebuild. On a site built for you, the same test page loads only what the page needs. Our guide to moving a Wix site to another host covers what moves with you and how the rankings are kept.
Questions people ask
Is a slow test page Wix's fault or mine?
A page with one heading has nothing of yours to slow it down, so its loading time belongs to the platform. The difference between that page and your real pages belongs to your content.
What is a good loading time for a Wix page?
Google's mark for a good page is the same on every platform: the main content within 2.5 seconds for three visits in four. A page on any builder is judged against it.
Should I leave Wix if my site is slow?
Only after measuring. If the floor is fast and your pages are slow, trimming the pages is the cheaper fix. If the floor itself is close to Google's mark, or slower than your competitors' pages, the platform is the constraint.
Free competitor gap report
The floor matters only beside the sites you compete with. Name up to three competitors and we run their pages and yours through the same speed tests, then send you whether the gap can be closed where you are.
