How to speed up a Wix website

A Wix website gets faster when less is loaded at the top of the page and fewer outside services are called. The nine steps below follow Wix's own performance guidance, in the order that usually pays most, with a measurement before and after so that each change is judged by its result.

1. Measure first

Run the home page through Google’s PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab, and write down the result. Do the same for your busiest landing page. Without a starting figure, no later change can be judged. Our guide to reading the Wix Site Speed dashboard explains which numbers to trust.

2. Clear the top of the page

The top of a page loads first, so what sits there decides how fast the page feels. Wix advises using plain elements in that space: text, shapes and buttons. Replace a slideshow or a full-screen photograph with one modest image and a heading.

3. Move video down, or out

Wix advises keeping video below the top of the page. A background video in the first screen is the single heaviest thing most home pages carry. Replace it with a still image, and link to the video lower down.

4. Remove animations that run on load

Entrance effects and transitions make the browser work before the visitor can read anything. Wix’s guidance is to limit them, most of all near the top of the page.

5. Cut the fonts

Each font is a file to download. Wix advises no more than three or four on a site. Two is better: one for headings and one for text.

6. Move or remove third-party apps and embeds

Wix says third-party apps and embedded content are delivered from other companies’ servers, and that it cannot optimise them. Its advice is to keep them off the home page and link to them from a button. Chat tools, social feeds, maps and booking widgets are the usual ones.

7. Limit lightboxes

Pop-ups that open on arrival add to what loads first. Wix advises limiting them across the site.

8. Trim the mobile version

Wix’s mobile editor can hide elements on phones without touching the desktop site. Hide what a phone visitor does not need, and shorten galleries and repeating lists to the items that matter.

9. Measure again

Run the same tests and compare with the first figures. The simulated score changes at once. The real-visitor figures in Google’s test and in Wix’s dashboard are averages over about a month, so they follow more slowly.

When the steps are done

A site that passes after these steps needs nothing more. A site that is still slow has reached something the steps cannot move, and our guide to a Wix site that is still slow shows how to find out what.

Questions people ask

How do I make my Wix site load faster?

Clear heavy content from the top of the page, keep video and animation below it, cut the fonts to three or four at most, and remove third-party apps and embeds from the home page. Measure with PageSpeed Insights before and after.

Do I need to compress images before uploading them to Wix?

Wix says images under 25 MB are compressed automatically, so they need no preparation. Choosing fewer and smaller images for the top of the page still helps.

How long before a speed change shows in Google's data?

Google's real-visitor figures cover the previous 28 days, and Wix's dashboard averages 30, so a change takes about a month to show in full. The simulated test shows it at once.
