How to move from Squarespace to WordPress

Squarespace exports part of a site in a file WordPress can read, which makes this the easiest of the moves between platforms. Simple pages, one blog and its posts travel in the file. The design, the shop and several page types do not, and the addresses still need redirecting.

1. Record the site first

Before exporting anything, list every address on the Squarespace site and export the pages and searches from Google Search Console. That list is the checklist for everything that follows.

2. Export from Squarespace

Squarespace’s export creates one .xml file. According to its help centre it holds layout pages, one blog page with all its posts, text blocks, image blocks and gallery pages. Products export separately, as a spreadsheet file.

3. Import into WordPress

Set WordPress up at a temporary address, with search engines discouraged. Under Tools, then Import, choose the WordPress importer and upload the file. Pages and posts appear with their text. Check the images, the internal links and the formatting of each.

4. Rebuild what did not travel

Squarespace lists what its export leaves out: store pages, portfolio and index pages, a second blog, product, video and audio blocks, drafts, style settings and custom CSS. Those are made again in WordPress, along with the design as a whole.

5. Redirect the addresses

Squarespace and WordPress name addresses differently. Blog posts are the usual trap: their addresses on Squarespace include the blog page’s name, and WordPress builds its own from the permalink settings. Either set WordPress’s permalinks to match the old pattern, or redirect each old address to its new one.

6. Switch the domain

Point the domain at WordPress and allow search engines again in Settings, Reading. A domain registered with Squarespace can stay there and be pointed, or be transferred away once any 60-day lock has passed.

7. Watch for a month

Submit the sitemap in Search Console, test the old addresses, and read the Page indexing report each week. Keep the Squarespace subscription until the images are confirmed in WordPress and the redirects are tested. Our guide to what Squarespace lets you move covers the export in detail, and speeding up a WordPress website covers the first job after launch.

Questions people ask

Can I import a Squarespace site into WordPress?

In part. Squarespace exports an .xml file in WordPress's format, and WordPress's importer reads it. Layout pages, one blog with its posts, text and images come across. Store pages, product blocks, video and audio blocks and all styling do not.

Do images transfer from Squarespace to WordPress?

The export file refers to the images where they sit on Squarespace. Check after importing that they have been copied into the WordPress media library, because a reference to the old site stops working when the subscription ends.

What is lost when leaving Squarespace?

The design, which belongs to Squarespace's templates, and anything on a page type the export skips. Squarespace says not everything exports because many features rely on its own code.
