Is Wix slower than WordPress or Squarespace?

No platform is fast or slow by name: a lean Wix site is faster than a bloated WordPress site, and the reverse. What differs is the ceiling. WordPress and custom-built sites let the owner change the hosting and the code, and website builders do not. Public data on how each platform's sites perform is published, and your own site can be tested in minutes.

Why the name is the wrong question

Two sites on the same platform can differ more than two platforms do. A Wix home page with one image and a heading loads quickly. A WordPress home page with a slideshow, six plugins and a chat tool does not. What was put on the page decides most of the result.

What really differs: who controls what

The platforms differ in what the owner is allowed to change when a page is too slow.

Wix Squarespace WordPress Custom build
Content and media Owner Owner Owner Owner
Design and layout Owner, within the editor Owner, within a template Owner Owner
The code that builds each page Platform Platform Owner, through theme and plugins Owner
Where the site is hosted Platform Platform Owner Owner

On a website builder, the bottom two rows are fixed. On WordPress or a custom build they are open, which is why those sites can be made faster and can also be made far worse.

Where the public data is

The HTTP Archive publishes a Tech Report that tracks how websites built with each technology perform on Google’s Core Web Vitals, using real-visitor data from the Chrome UX Report. It lets anyone compare Wix, Squarespace, WordPress and others over time.

The report carries its own warning, and it is a fair one: a technology that correlates with good or poor performance is not necessarily the cause of it. The sites on a platform reflect the people who choose it as much as the platform.

How to compare fairly

A fair comparison uses your own page and one real rival.

  1. Choose the same kind of page on each site: home page against home page, service page against service page.
  2. Run both through PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab.
  3. Compare the real-visitor section first, and the simulated score second.
  4. Repeat for two more competitors.

Our guide to checking your website speed explains the figures.

What the answer means for you

If your site is as fast as the sites it competes with, its platform is not a problem worth solving. If it is slower after you have trimmed it, the question becomes whether the platform lets you close the gap. Our guide to a Wix site that is still slow shows how to find that out with a single test page.

Questions people ask

Is WordPress faster than Wix?

WordPress can be faster, and it can be slower. WordPress speed depends on the hosting, the theme and the plugins chosen, all of which the owner controls. Wix sets those for you, which removes both the work and the option of doing better.

Is Wix slower than Squarespace?

Neither is reliably faster for every site. Test your own page and a comparable one, because the design and media on a page outweigh the name of the builder.

What is the fastest kind of website?

A site made of plain, pre-built pages with little script, served from a network close to the visitor. Any platform can approach that, and a custom build has the fewest obstacles in the way.

Free competitor gap report

The comparison that matters is with the sites you compete against, whatever they are built on. Name up to three and we run their pages and yours through the same speed tests, then send you who is faster and what it would take to catch them.

  1. Speed and technical health, side by side
  2. On-page SEO and site structure
  3. The content they are found for and you are not
  4. Who holds the searches that matter in your market
  5. A prioritised list of what to fix first
