How to move a store from Squarespace to Shopify

A Squarespace store moves to Shopify as a product file, a set of rebuilt pages and a list of redirects. Squarespace exports products as a spreadsheet, Shopify imports products from its own spreadsheet template, and the work is in fitting one to the other and in making sure no old address is left without a destination.

1. Export the products from Squarespace

Squarespace exports products to a .csv file. Export orders and contacts as well, so that the history is kept even if it is not imported.

2. Fit the file to Shopify’s template

Shopify’s guide for this move is specific: download Shopify’s product CSV template, and edit the Squarespace file until its columns match. The file should contain only the columns the template defines. Variants and images need the most care.

3. Import and check

In Shopify’s admin, open Products and choose Import. Leave the products unpublished, as Shopify advises, and check a sample: prices, variants, images, descriptions.

4. Rebuild the pages and the blog

Shopify’s theme replaces Squarespace’s template, so the home page, the information pages and the blog are rebuilt. Copy the text across, and rewrite thin collection and product descriptions while you are there.

5. List and import the redirects

Squarespace product addresses include the store page’s name. Shopify puts every product under /products/. Write the two side by side for every product, collection and page, and import the list as URL redirects, which Shopify supports from a CSV file. Shopify’s advice is to do this before the domain is transferred.

6. Move the domain and test

Point the domain at Shopify. Place a test order, try a dozen old addresses, and submit /sitemap.xml in Search Console. Keep the Squarespace subscription until all three are done.

7. The first month

Read Search Console’s Page indexing report weekly, and fix any old address that returns “not found”. Our guides to whether Shopify is bad for SEO and why a Shopify store gets no traffic cover what decides how the new store ranks.

Questions people ask

Can I transfer products from Squarespace to Shopify?

Yes. Squarespace exports products to a .csv file, and Shopify's guide is to edit that file to match Shopify's product template before importing it under Products.

Do orders and customers move from Squarespace to Shopify?

Products move by file, and Squarespace also exports orders and contacts as files. Whether Shopify can import those depends on the route chosen, and a migration app or a Shopify partner is the usual way to carry history across.

How do I keep my SEO when moving to Shopify?

Set up a redirect from every old address to its Shopify equivalent before the domain moves, carry over the titles and descriptions of pages that rank, and submit the new sitemap. Shopify can import the redirects from a file.
