Can you move a Wix site to another host?

A Wix site cannot be exported. Wix states that a site built on its platform has to run on its servers, so moving to another host means rebuilding the site there. What you keep is everything that matters: the domain, the words and images, and, with the right redirects, the rankings.

What Wix says

Wix’s help centre is direct about it: a site built with Wix uses Wix’s own technology and must run on Wix’s servers. No export file exists, and no other host can run the site. Anyone offering to “transfer” a Wix site is offering to rebuild it.

What you can take with you

Three things move, and they are the three that carry the value.

  • The domain. It can be transferred to another provider, or simply pointed at the new site while it stays registered where it is.
  • The content. The words, the photographs you own and the product details are yours to copy.
  • The rankings. They belong to your addresses and your content, and both can be carried across.

What has to be rebuilt

Everything Wix assembled for you is rebuilt on the new platform: the design, the page layouts, the forms, and any booking system or shop. A rebuild is also the chance to drop what slowed the old site, as our guide to why a Wix site is slow describes.

The order that protects your rankings

The move is safe when it is done in this order.

  1. Record the old site. List every address, and export from Search Console the pages and searches that bring visitors.
  2. Build the new site on a private address, carrying over the content that ranks.
  3. Map each old address to its new one, and set up a permanent redirect for each.
  4. Point the domain at the new site.
  5. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console and watch the reports for four weeks.

Our guide to redesigning a website without losing rankings covers each step in detail.

Moving the domain

A domain bought through Wix can be transferred away by the site owner. Wix states two waiting periods: a domain cannot be transferred within 60 days of purchase, or within 60 days of a change to the registrant’s contact details. On request, Wix sends an authorisation code to the registrant’s email address, and the new provider uses it to complete the transfer.

Email needs care. Wix notes that mail records have to be added again at the new provider for a business mailbox to keep working. Do that before the switch, not after.

Before you cancel Wix

Keep the Wix plan running until the new site is live, the redirects are tested and the domain has moved. Cancelling first takes the old site down while the new one is not yet answering, and that gap is where rankings and enquiries are lost.

Questions people ask

Can I export my Wix website?

No. Wix states that a Wix site must run on Wix's servers and cannot be exported or hosted elsewhere. The content can be copied and the site rebuilt on another platform.

Can I transfer my Wix domain to another provider?

Yes. Wix lets the site owner transfer a domain away, with two conditions it states: not within 60 days of buying the domain, and not within 60 days of changing the registrant's contact details. Wix sends an authorisation code to the registrant's email address.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I leave Wix?

Not if every old address is redirected to its new equivalent and the content that ranks is carried over. Rankings are lost when addresses change with no redirect.

A move is the moment to fix what held the old site back. Name up to three competitors and we measure your Wix site against theirs, then send you what the rebuilt site has to do better.

  1. Speed and technical health, side by side
  2. On-page SEO and site structure
  3. The content they are found for and you are not
