How to move from Wix to WordPress

Moving from Wix to WordPress is a rebuild, because Wix does not export sites. The content is copied across, the design is made again in WordPress, and every Wix address is redirected to its new home. Done in the right order, the move keeps the domain and the rankings, and gains control of the hosting and the code.

What you can take from Wix

Wix keeps the site and releases the pieces.

  • Text and images: copied by hand, page by page.
  • Shop products: Wix Stores can export the product list as a CSV file, up to 5,000 rows in each file.
  • The domain: pointed at the new site, or transferred to another provider.
  • The record of what ranks: exported from Google Search Console, which belongs to you and not to Wix.

What is rebuilt

The design, the layouts, the menus, the forms and any booking or shop functions are made again in WordPress. This is the point of the move as much as its cost: the new site is built on a theme and hosting of your choosing, without the weight of the old one.

The order to work in

  1. Record the Wix site. Crawl it for a list of every address, and export the pages and searches from Search Console.
  2. Set up WordPress on its hosting, at a temporary address, with search engines discouraged in Settings, Reading.
  3. Rebuild the pages, carrying over the titles, headings and content of every page that brings visitors.
  4. Map every Wix address to its WordPress address in a two-column list.
  5. Add the redirects in WordPress, with a redirect plugin or in the server’s settings.
  6. Point the domain at the WordPress site, and untick the search engine setting.
  7. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console and test the old addresses.

The redirects that matter most

Wix addresses rarely match WordPress ones. A Wix blog post usually sits under /post/, and a WordPress post sits wherever its permalink settings put it. Every old address that brought visitors or was linked from another site needs its own redirect. A redirect of everything to the home page throws the old rankings away.

After the switch

Keep the Wix plan active until the new site has answered at the domain for a few days and the redirects have been tested. Then watch Search Console’s Page indexing report for four weeks. Our guides to redesigning a website without losing rankings and to what Wix lets you move cover the detail, and speeding up a WordPress website covers getting the new site fast from the start.

Questions people ask

Can I transfer my Wix site to WordPress automatically?

No tool moves a whole Wix site. Wix states that its sites cannot be exported, so pages are rebuilt in WordPress and their text and images copied across. Shop products are the exception: Wix can export those as a file.

Will moving from Wix to WordPress hurt my SEO?

A careless move does. A careful one keeps the content that ranks and redirects each Wix address to the matching WordPress address, so Google passes the old pages' standing to the new ones.

Can I keep my domain when I leave Wix?

Yes. A domain registered elsewhere is simply pointed at the new site. A domain bought through Wix can be transferred away, subject to the 60-day waiting periods Wix states.
