Is Wix bad for SEO?
Wix gives a site owner control of the things search engines read: titles, descriptions, addresses, redirects and structured data, and it produces the sitemap itself. Where Wix sites most often go wrong is elsewhere: in how fast a heavily designed page loads, and in the fact that a Wix site can never leave Wix.

What Wix handles for you
Wix’s help centre lists what a site gets without any setup: a sitemap and a robots.txt file, updated as the site changes; default titles, descriptions and social sharing tags on every page; preset structured data on some page types; and an llms.txt file for AI systems. Completing Wix’s SEO Setup Checklist also submits the sitemap to Google.
What you can control
The settings that matter are open to the owner. Each page’s title, description and address can be edited, canonical tags can be set, redirects can be added, the robots.txt file can be changed, and custom structured data can be added to a page.
What it leaves to you
No platform does the part that decides rankings. That part is the same on Wix as anywhere.
- A page for each thing customers search for.
- Titles and descriptions written for each page, not left at the default.
- Enough on each page to answer the search.
- Links between your pages, and links from other websites.
A Wix site with none of this done does not rank, and the platform is not the reason.
The two real limits
Two things about Wix cannot be changed from the dashboard.
The first is speed. Wix’s own guidance says third-party apps and embedded content are served from other companies’ servers and cannot be optimised by Wix, and it advises against animations, video and heavy content at the top of a page. A richly designed Wix site often fails Google’s speed measures for those reasons. Our guide to why a Wix site is slow shows how to measure yours.
The second is that the site cannot leave. Wix states that a Wix site must run on Wix’s servers and cannot be exported. If the platform stops suiting the business, the site is rebuilt, not moved. Our guide to moving a Wix site to another host covers what that involves.
A test you can run today
Opinion about platforms is cheap, and measurement settles it for your site.
- Search Google for
site:followed by your domain, to confirm the pages are indexed. - Run your home page and a competitor’s through PageSpeed Insights, on mobile.
- Pick one search you want, and compare your page with the page that holds it, using why a competitor outranks you.
If your pages are indexed, as fast as theirs and still behind, the platform is not your problem. If they are far slower after you have trimmed them, it may be.
Questions people ask
Can a Wix site rank on Google?
Yes. Wix sites are indexed and ranked like any other. A Wix site that is not ranking usually has a content, competition or speed problem, and each can be tested.
Is Wix or WordPress better for SEO?
Both can rank. WordPress gives more control over how pages are built and where the site is hosted, and asks for more upkeep in return. Wix asks for less upkeep and gives less control. The better choice is the one a business will actually keep up.
Why is my Wix site not ranking?
First check that Google has indexed it, then compare one of your pages with the page that outranks it. The cause is far more often thin content, missing titles or a slow page than the platform's name.
Free competitor gap report
The fair test of any platform is a comparison. Name up to three competitors and we measure your Wix site against theirs on the same checks, then send you whether the gap is in the platform, the pages or the content.
