See exactly where your competitors are ahead.

Name up to three competitors. We measure your site and theirs on the same tests and send you a report showing where each site is ahead, and by how much, and what to fix first. The report is free, and it needs no access to your accounts.

What the report covers

  • Speed and technical health, side by side

Core Web Vitals, crawling, indexing, redirects and broken links for your site and each competitor, run through the same tests.

  • On-page SEO and site structure

Titles, descriptions, headings, internal links and structured data, compared one page type at a time.

  • The content they are found for and you are not

The subjects and questions their pages answer and yours do not, in order of how close you are to competing for them.

  • Who holds the searches that matter in your market

The sites that appear for the searches you care about, and the pages they appear with.

  • A prioritised list of what to fix first

The gaps in the order that closes the most of the gap, each with the evidence behind it.

How to get yours

  1. Email us your website, where you compete and up to three competitors your customers compare you with.
  2. The Medusa instrument, which we built and run, measures your site and theirs from what is public.
  3. You receive the report, with a written proposal for closing the gaps.
  4. What you do with both is your decision.

Why a comparison, and not an audit of your site alone

A ranking is a contest between sites. An audit of one site lists its faults; a comparison shows which of those faults cost you most, because it shows what the sites ahead of you do differently. The fixes that close that difference come first, and the rest can wait.

What the report does not establish

The report states where each site stands on the day it was measured. Three things lie outside it, and they are worth knowing before you read one.

  • A ranking to come. The report shows the gaps; search engines decide what closing them is worth.
  • What only you can see. Produced from what is public, it has no view of your own Search Console and Analytics until you grant one.
  • What a competitor is about to change. It records what they have published, on the day it was read.

None of that makes the report less useful. A gap with a size and a cause is something you can act on, and most of the causes turn out to sit on your own site.

Questions about the report

Is the competitor gap report really free?

Yes. There is no charge for the report. It arrives with a written proposal for closing the gaps, and what you do with either is your decision.

Do you need access to my website or accounts?

No. The report is produced from what is public: a full crawl of your site and of each competitor's. Connecting Search Console and Analytics later adds your own search data to the picture.

What do I need to send?

Your website address, where you compete, whether that is an area, a country or several countries, and up to three businesses that appear above you.

Which competitors should I name?

Name the sites that appear above you for the searches you want. They are not always the businesses you think of as rivals: in search, a directory, a marketplace or a national brand can be the one taking your customers.
