Why your website is so slow, and how to find the cause

A slow website is slow in one of five places: the server takes too long to answer, the images are too heavy, too much script runs before the page can be used, fonts and effects hold up the text, or the platform itself adds weight the owner cannot remove. Google's free test shows which, and the fix depends entirely on the answer.

Run the test first

Guessing wastes money. Enter the page in Google’s PageSpeed Insights, choose the mobile tab, and read the diagnostics under the score. They list what held the page up, in order of cost. Our guide to checking your website speed explains the headline figures.

1. The server is slow to answer

The first delay is the wait before anything arrives. The test reports it as server response time. Cheap shared hosting, a site with no caching, and a database doing too much work on each visit are the usual causes. Better hosting or caching fixes this one, and only this one.

2. The images are too heavy

Images are the largest files on most pages. A photograph uploaded straight from a camera is many times larger than a web page needs. Resize each image to the size it is shown, compress it, and use a modern format. The image at the top of the page matters most.

3. Too much script

Scripts are instructions the browser has to download and run before the page responds: sliders, pop-ups, chat tools, analytics, advertising tags, and the plugins or apps behind them. Each one is small. Thirty are not. Remove what is not earning its place.

4. Fonts and effects

Each font is a file, and text may not appear until it arrives. Animations that run on load add to the wait. Two fonts and no entrance effects is a sound default.

5. The platform

Website builders and heavily built themes load their own code on every page, whatever the page contains. That part cannot be trimmed by the owner. The test for it is a page with almost nothing on it: its loading time is the floor.

Our guides cover the platforms by name: why a Wix site is slow, why a Squarespace site is slow, and how to find the platform’s limit with a test page.

Fix in order of cost

Work down the test’s own list. The first item usually costs more time than the rest together. Fix it, test again, and repeat until the page passes or the remaining delay belongs to something you cannot change. At that point the choice is between accepting it and rebuilding, which do I need a new website? covers.

Questions people ask

How do I find out why my website is slow?

Run the page through Google's PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab. Its diagnostics list what delayed the page, largest first: server response, images, scripts, fonts and third-party code.

Why is my website slow on mobile but fine on desktop?

A phone has a slower processor and often a slower connection, so the same page takes longer to load and to run its scripts. Google judges the mobile version, which is why the mobile result is the one to fix.

Will better hosting make my website faster?

Only if the server is the slow part. The test shows it as a long initial server response. If the delay is in images or scripts, faster hosting changes little.
