Do I need a new website?

A new website is the right answer when the faults are in the foundations: the platform, the structure or the design itself. It is the wrong answer when the faults are on the surface, where a repair costs a fraction as much. Six signs point to the first, and four common problems belong to the second.

Six signs the site has reached its limit

Each of these is a fault in the foundations.

  • The site is slow after every reasonable fix, because the platform or theme is heavy.
  • The site cannot be made to work properly on a phone.
  • Adding or changing a page needs a developer, or cannot be done at all.
  • The structure buries the pages customers search for, and cannot be rearranged.
  • The platform cannot be moved, and no longer does what the business needs.
  • The design makes the business look smaller or older than its competitors.

Four problems that do not need a new site

All four are common, and a repair solves each.

  • The site is not found. Titles, content and links are the usual causes, and all can be changed on the existing site.
  • The site gets visits and no enquiries. That is a page problem: the offer, the next step and the proof.
  • The images are too heavy. Resizing them takes an afternoon.
  • The content is out of date. Rewrite it.

Our guides to a website that is not ranking and a website that gets no enquiries cover the first two.

How to decide

Measure before deciding. Test the speed of your main pages and of your competitors’. Check the site on a phone. Read in Search Console what it is found for. If the faults are in the list of four, repair. If they are in the list of six, a repair is money spent on a site that will still hold you back.

What a rebuild must keep

A new site that loses what the old one earned is a step backwards. Three things carry over.

  • The addresses, or a redirect from each old one to its replacement.
  • The content that brings visitors, with its subject and headings intact.
  • The domain, and the accounts that hold your data.

Our guide to redesigning a website without losing rankings is the method, and how to choose a web design company covers who to trust with it.

Questions people ask

How often should a website be redesigned?

When it stops doing its job, not on a schedule. A site that loads quickly, works on a phone, can be found and brings enquiries does not need replacing because it is a few years old.

Is it better to redesign a website or start again?

Keep what works. The addresses, the content that ranks and the domain carry value that a fresh start throws away. A rebuild replaces the design and the platform and carries those across.

Will a new website improve my Google ranking?

Only if the old site's faults were holding it back and the new one fixes them. A rebuild that changes addresses without redirects can lose the positions those pages held; Google's guidance on moving a site is built around keeping them. Dropping content that ranked gives up whatever it brought.

Free competitor gap report

The decision is easier with evidence. Name up to three competitors and we measure your site against theirs, then send you what is holding it back and whether a rebuild or targeted fixes would close the gap.

  1. Speed and technical health, side by side
  2. On-page SEO and site structure
  3. The content they are found for and you are not
  4. Who holds the searches that matter in your market
