SEO or Google Ads: which should come first?

Google Ads buys a place on the results page today and stops the moment the budget does. SEO earns a place over months and keeps it with no charge per click. Which comes first depends on how soon you need customers and whether your site is ready to convert them.

What each one is

Google Ads places your result in the sponsored positions for the searches you bid on, and charges you when someone clicks. SEO is the work of making your pages the best answer for a search, so that Google lists them in the unpaid results below.

Speed

Ads can be showing within a day of the account being set up. SEO takes longer: technical fixes can register within days of Google revisiting the site, and new pages usually take weeks to months to settle into a position.

Cost

Ads have a visible price: every click is charged, and popular searches cost more. SEO has no charge per click, and its cost is the work: the audit, the fixes, the writing. The difference is in what happens when the spending stops.

Staying power

An ad disappears the moment the budget runs out. A page that has earned a position keeps bringing visitors for as long as it stays the better answer, which makes SEO slower to start and slower to fade.

When ads come first

Ads are the right first move in four cases.

  • The site is new and has no search presence yet.
  • The business is seasonal, and the season is close.
  • Enquiries are needed this month, not next quarter.
  • You do not yet know which searches bring buyers, and want to find out quickly.

When SEO comes first

SEO is the right first move in three cases.

  • The budget is small and has to keep working after it is spent.
  • Customers research for weeks before buying, and read several pages on the way.
  • Clicks in your market are expensive enough that ads cannot pay for themselves.

The page decides both

Both channels deliver a visitor to a page, and the page decides whether that visitor becomes a customer. A slow or unclear page wastes an ad click and loses an organic one. Our guide to checking whether Google Ads is wasting your budget starts with that page.

A sensible order

For most businesses the order that wastes least is the same. Put the site right first, so that every visit has a fair chance. Run ads on a small set of searches to learn which ones bring customers. Then build pages for the searches that proved their worth, so that the visits you were paying for begin to arrive unpaid.

Questions people ask

Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?

SEO has no charge per click, but it is not free: it costs the work of building pages and fixing the site. Ads cost money for every visit. Over a long period a page that ranks can cost less per visitor than an ad, because the visit itself is not paid for.

Do Google Ads improve organic rankings?

No. Google states that advertising does not change organic positions. Ads and organic results are separate systems.

Can I run SEO and Google Ads together?

Yes, and each informs the other. The search terms report shows which searches bring customers, which tells you what to build pages for, and stronger pages make the ads convert better.

Free competitor gap report

Both channels lead to the same site, so start by seeing how it compares. Name up to three competitors and we measure your site against theirs, then send you whether the gap is in the pages, the search presence or both.
