Google Ads clicks but no conversions: where to look

Clicks with no conversions come from one of three places: the conversions are happening and not being recorded, the clicks are from people who were never going to buy, or the page they land on loses them. The account and the page settle which, and the order matters, because fixing the page is wasted if the tracking is what is broken.

Standard 49 · 101 checks

1. Is the tracking recording anything?

A conversion that is not recorded looks the same as one that never happened. In the account, open Goals, then Conversions, and read the status of each conversion action. Then test it: make an enquiry or a test purchase yourself and see whether it appears.

Calls are the usual gap. A visitor who phones after clicking an ad is a conversion, and it is only counted if call tracking has been set up.

2. Are the clicks from buyers?

Open the search terms report and read what people actually typed. Clicks from searches for jobs, free versions, definitions or a different product are paid for and worthless. Our guide to whether Google Ads is wasting your budget covers the report and the fixes: negative keywords, match types and location settings.

3. Does the page keep the promise?

An ad makes a promise, and the page has a few seconds to keep it. Open the page your ad leads to, on a phone, and check four things.

  • The first screen repeats what the ad offered, in the same words.
  • The page loads quickly. Our guide to checking your website speed shows how to test it.
  • The next step is visible without scrolling: a number to call, a form, a button.
  • The price, or the reason to trust you, appears before the visitor has to hunt for it.

An ad that leads to the home page fails the first check almost by definition.

4. Is the offer itself competitive?

Sometimes the tracking works, the visitors are right and the page is clear, and people still leave. Search for your own keyword, open the competitors’ ads and compare the offers. A visitor comparing three tabs chooses on price, delivery, proof and convenience.

What to change first

Fix in the same order as the checks. Tracking comes first, because every later judgement depends on it. Then the searches, which stop the waste at once. Then the page, which takes longer and repays more. If the ads are not appearing at all, start with why your Google Ads are not showing.

Questions people ask

Why am I getting clicks but no sales from Google Ads?

Check three things in order: that sales are being recorded at all, that the searches triggering the ads come from buyers, and that the landing page delivers what the ad promised. The fault is in one of them.

How many clicks does it take to get a conversion?

No single figure applies. It depends on the price, the trade and the page. The useful measure is your own rate over a few hundred clicks, before and after a change.

Are my clicks fake?

Google filters invalid clicks and does not charge for those it detects. Poorly matched searches are a far more common cause of worthless clicks than fraud, and the search terms report shows them.

Free competitor gap report

The page behind the ad is where most clicks are lost. Name up to three competitors and we measure your landing pages against theirs, then send you what theirs do in the first screen that yours do not.

  1. Speed and technical health, side by side
  2. On-page SEO and site structure
  3. The content they are found for and you are not
