Why your Wix site is not showing up on Google

A Wix site that does not appear on Google is usually held back by one of a few settings: the site is not published, search engine indexing is switched off for the site or the page, the page sits behind a password, or the site was never submitted. Each can be checked in the Wix dashboard in a few minutes.

Check whether Google has the site at all

Search Google for site: followed by your domain. No results means the site is not indexed, and the settings below are the place to look. Results mean the site is indexed and the problem is its position, which the last section covers.

1. Is the site published?

Wix keeps changes in the editor until you publish them. Search engines see only the published site, so a site that was never published, or a page added since the last publish, does not exist for Google.

2. Is indexing switched on for the site?

Wix has one switch for the whole site. In the dashboard, open the SEO area, then Tools and settings, then SEO Settings, and make sure “Let search engines index your site” is on. With it off, every page tells Google to stay away.

3. Is indexing switched on for the page?

Each page has the same choice in its own SEO settings. A page set not to be indexed stays out of Google even when the site-wide switch is on. Check the pages that matter one by one.

4. Is the page behind a password?

Google cannot read a page that asks for a password or a member login. Wix’s help centre lists both as reasons a page is missing from search. Remove the restriction from any page you want found.

5. Are redirects or canonical tags pointing elsewhere?

Two settings can send Google to a different address. A redirect in Wix’s URL Redirect Manager forwards the page to another. A customised canonical tag, in the page’s advanced SEO settings, names another page as the original. Delete a redirect that should not be there, and reset the canonical tag to its default.

6. Does the page have enough on it?

Wix’s own advice is that a page with very little text can be treated as empty, and it suggests 250 to 400 words. A page that is a heading and a photograph gives Google nothing to index.

Search engines find pages by following links. A page that is in no menu and linked from no other page is hard to find, on Wix as anywhere.

8. Has the site been submitted?

Wix’s SEO Setup Checklist submits the site to Google when it is completed. The alternative is to add the site to Google Search Console and submit the sitemap there, which also gives you Google’s own report on each page.

If the site is indexed and still not found

A site that passes every check above has a ranking problem, not a Wix problem. Our guide to why your website is not showing up on Google covers that case, and redesigning a website without losing rankings covers what to protect if you decide to move off the template.

Questions people ask

How do I submit my Wix site to Google?

Complete the SEO Setup Checklist in the Wix dashboard, which submits the site to Google, or add the site to Google Search Console yourself and submit its sitemap there.

How long does a new Wix site take to appear on Google?

Usually days to a few weeks after it is submitted. A site that has not appeared after a month has a setting or a quality problem, and the checks in this guide find it.

Is Wix bad for SEO?

Wix sites can and do rank. The limits people meet are usually in how the site was built: thin pages, missing titles and slow, image-heavy designs. A site that has outgrown its template is a separate question, and a rebuild is one answer to it.

Free competitor gap report
