How to share Search Console and Analytics access safely

An agency never needs your Google password. Search Console and Google Analytics both let you add another person's email address as a user with limited rights, and remove it whenever you choose. You remain the owner throughout.

Search Console: add a user

Google Search Console shows how a site appears in Google Search, and only an owner of the property can add people to it.

  1. Open Search Console and choose the property.
  2. Go to Settings, then Users and permissions.
  3. Select Add user and enter the agency’s email address.
  4. Choose the permission: Restricted to read reports, or Full to see everything and take some actions.

Google Analytics: add a user

Google Analytics records what visitors do on the site, and access is given per property.

  1. Open Analytics and go to Admin.
  2. Under the property, open Property access management.
  3. Select the plus button, then Add users, and enter the agency’s email address.
  4. Choose the role. Viewer can see reports and change nothing.

Which role to give

Reporting needs the least access. For an agency that will only measure and report, Restricted in Search Console and Viewer in Analytics are enough. An agency that will also fix things may need Full access in Search Console, for example to submit a sitemap, and the Editor role in Analytics to change its settings. Start low and raise the role when a task needs it.

What never to share

Passwords and sign-in codes stay with the owner. No agency needs the account’s password, its two-step codes, or ownership of the property to do its work. A request for any of those is a reason to stop and ask why.

Removing access

Access is removed on the same screens it was given. In Search Console, open Users and permissions and remove the user. In Analytics, open Property access management and do the same. The change takes effect at once.

If neither is set up yet

Both tools are free, and both belong in the business’s own Google account. An agency can do the setting up, as long as the account and the ownership are yours and the agency is added as a user afterwards.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to add an agency to Google Search Console?

Adding an agency as a user with a limited role is safe. A restricted user can read reports and cannot change settings or remove the owner, and an owner can take the access away at any time.

What is the difference between an owner and a user in Search Console?

An owner controls the property: owners add and remove users and can change every setting. A full user sees all the data and can take some actions. A restricted user has a simpler, read-only view.

Can an agency see my customers' personal details in Google Analytics?

Standard Analytics reports show visits and behaviour in aggregate, and Google's terms forbid sending it personal details such as names or email addresses. An agency with the Viewer role sees those aggregate reports.

Free competitor gap report

Access is only needed once work begins. For the first comparison, name up to three competitors: we measure your site and theirs from what is public and send you where the gaps are.

  1. Speed and technical health, side by side
  2. On-page SEO and site structure
  3. The content they are found for and you are not
  4. Who holds the searches that matter in your market
  5. A prioritised list of what to fix first
