> Why a Wix site is slow, how to measure it with Google's PageSpeed Insights, the fixes Wix itself recommends, and how to tell when the platform is the limit. - Canonical: https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/why-is-my-wix-site-so-slow/ --- # Why your Wix site is so slow, and what to do about it A slow Wix site is usually slow for reasons its owner can see: heavy images and video at the top of the page, too many fonts, animations, and third-party apps. [Wix's own guidance](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices) lists each one. Measure the site, fix what that guidance names, and measure again. What remains is the cost of the platform itself. Updated 11 October 2026 ## Measure before changing anything Speed is measured, not felt. Enter your home page in [Google’s PageSpeed Insights](https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/insights/v5/about) and read the mobile tab, because it is the view [Google itself uses to index a site](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/mobile/mobile-sites-mobile-first-indexing). Note [three figures](https://web.dev/articles/vitals): how long the main content takes to appear, how quickly the page responds to a tap, and how much the layout shifts. Our guide to [checking your website speed](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/how-to-check-your-website-speed/) explains each one and the marks to aim for. Run the same test on a competitor’s home page. The gap between the two results is the problem to solve. ## What Wix already does Wix handles some of the work without being asked. Its [help centre](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices) says uploaded images are resized automatically and converted to modern formats, and that images and videos are loaded only as a visitor reaches them. A slow Wix site is slow in spite of those. ## The causes Wix itself names [Wix’s performance guidance](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices) lists the causes, and they are few. - Heavy content at the top of the page. [Wix advises](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices) plain elements there, such as text, shapes and buttons, because the top is loaded first. - Video at the top of the page. [Wix advises](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices) keeping video lower down. - [Animations and effects that run as the page loads](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices). - Too many fonts. [Wix’s text guidance](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-optimizing-your-text) says three or fewer, counting system and custom fonts together. - Third-party apps and embedded content. [Wix says](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices) these are delivered from other companies’ servers, that it cannot optimise them, and that they may add to loading time. - [Lightboxes, and long galleries on mobile](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices). ## The fixes, in order Start with what is seen first and costs most. 1. Replace a video or slideshow at the top of the home page with one still image and a heading. 2. Remove animations that run on load. 3. Move embedded feeds, maps and chat tools off the home page, or remove them. 4. Cut the fonts to two families. 5. Use the [mobile editor](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices) to hide what a phone does not need. Then run the test again and compare. ## What no setting can change A Wix site [runs on Wix’s servers and is assembled by Wix’s code](https://support.wix.com/en/article/exporting-or-embedding-your-wix-site-elsewhere). [Wix states](https://support.wix.com/en/article/exporting-or-embedding-your-wix-site-elsewhere) that a site built on its platform cannot be hosted anywhere else. The owner controls the content and the design, and has no control over how the page is built and delivered. If the site has been stripped back and the test still fails, the remaining cost belongs to the platform, and the choice is between accepting it and rebuilding elsewhere. Our guide to [moving a Wix site to another host](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/can-you-move-a-wix-site-to-another-host/) sets out what that involves, and what you keep. ## Questions people ask ### Is Wix slow? Some Wix sites are fast and many are not. The difference is mostly in what was put on the page: large media, animations, fonts and third-party apps. [Google's PageSpeed Insights](https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/insights/v5/about) shows where a particular site stands. ### Does a slow Wix site hurt my Google ranking? Speed is one of the signals Google uses, through its [Core Web Vitals](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/page-experience). A slow page also keeps fewer of its visitors, which [Google's own research](https://web.dev/learn/performance/why-speed-matters) says has a negative impact on revenue, whatever its position. ### How do I test my Wix site's speed? Enter the address in [Google's PageSpeed Insights](https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/insights/v5/about) and read the mobile result. Wix also [collects performance data for each site and shows it in the dashboard](https://support.wix.com/en/article/site-performance-best-practices). ## Free competitor gap report Slow only means something beside a faster competitor.
