# Why your website looks bad on mobile, and how to fix it

A website looks bad on a phone when it was designed for a wide screen and squeezed: text too small to read, buttons too close to tap, content running off the side. Google reads the mobile version of a site first, and many sites take most of their visits on phones, so the phone version is the one that counts.

## Check it properly

A desktop browser window made narrow is not a phone. Use a real one, on mobile data, and do four things: read a paragraph without zooming, open the menu, tap the phone number, and complete the contact form. Whatever is awkward for you is awkward for every customer.

## The six usual faults

Most sites that look bad on a phone have one or more of these.

1. Text too small to read without zooming.

2. Buttons and links too small or too close together to tap accurately.

3. Content wider than the screen, so the page scrolls sideways.

4. Images that are cropped badly or push the text off screen.

5. Pop-ups that cover the page and are hard to close.

6. A menu that is hard to open or impossible to use.

## Why it happens

Older sites were built for desktop and never adapted. Newer ones are usually responsive, but the phone layout was generated automatically and never checked. Website builders offer a separate mobile editor for this reason: the automatic layout needs a person to tidy it.

## What fixes each one

The fixes are mostly small.

- Text: a base size that reads comfortably on a phone, and no long lines of capitals.

- Buttons: large enough for a thumb, with space around them.

- Width: nothing with a fixed width wider than a phone screen, including tables and embedded maps.

- Images: resized for the phone, with the subject in the centre.

- Pop-ups: removed from the phone version, or delayed until the visitor has read something.

- Menu: a short list of the pages that matter.

## Speed is part of it

A phone is slower than a computer, and the same page takes longer to load on one. A site that looks right and takes ten seconds to appear has still failed. Our guide to [why a website is slow](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/why-is-my-website-so-slow/) covers the causes.

## When the fix is a rebuild

A site built before phones mattered often cannot be adapted without being rebuilt, because its layout assumes a wide screen throughout. Our guide to [whether you need a new website](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/do-i-need-a-new-website/) sets out how to decide.

## Questions people ask

### How do I check if my website is mobile friendly?

Open it on a real phone and try to do what a customer would: read a page, tap the menu, call the number, fill in the form. Then run it through Google's PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab for what the eye misses.

### Does a bad mobile site affect Google rankings?

Yes. Google indexes the mobile version of a site, so what a phone sees is what Google judges. Content missing from the mobile version is content Google does not count.

### Why does my website look different on mobile?

A responsive site rearranges itself for a narrow screen: columns stack, menus fold away, images shrink. When that is done carelessly, elements overlap, shrink too far or run off the side.
