# Why your website is not getting enquiries

A website that gets visitors and no enquiries is failing at one of five points: the visitors are the wrong ones, the page does not say plainly what is offered, the next step is hard to find, the page is too slow to wait for, or nothing on it gives a stranger a reason to trust the business. Each can be checked in an afternoon.

## 1. Are the right people arriving?

Enquiries come from visitors who wanted what you sell. Open Search Console and read the searches that bring people to the site. If they are about something you do not offer, or come from places you do not serve, no page design will turn them into customers.

## 2. Does the first screen say what you do?

A visitor decides in seconds. The first screen of the page, before any scrolling, should say what you offer, for whom and where. A photograph and a slogan do not. Ask someone who does not know the business to look for five seconds and tell you what it sells.

## 3. Is the next step obvious?

The phone number, the form or the booking button should be visible without hunting, and should appear again at the end of the page. On a phone, the number should dial when tapped. Then test it: send yourself an enquiry through every form. A form that fails without a message loses enquiries nobody knows about.

## 4. Is the page fast enough to wait for?

A visitor on a phone gives a page a few seconds. Run the page through Google’s PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab. Our guide to [checking your website speed](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/how-to-check-your-website-speed/) explains the result.

## 5. Is there a reason to trust you?

A stranger needs evidence before making contact. The strongest forms are specific.

- Reviews from named customers, with a link to where they were left.

- Photographs of real work, not stock images.

- Prices, or at least a starting figure.

- An address, a company number and a named way to complain.

## Find the point that fails

Analytics shows where visitors give up. Look at the pages people land on, how many go on to the contact page, and how many of those submit the form. The largest fall between two steps is the point to fix first.

## When the site itself is the obstacle

A site that cannot be made fast, clear and easy to act on has reached the end of what its design allows. Our guide to [whether you need a new website](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/do-i-need-a-new-website/) sets out how to tell.

## Questions people ask

### Why is my website not converting visitors into leads?

Usually because the page does not make the offer and the next step obvious in its first screen, or because the visitors arriving were never likely customers. Check where the visitors come from before changing the page.

### How many enquiries should a website get?

No single figure applies, because it depends on the trade, the price and where the visitors come from. The useful comparison is your own site before and after a change, measured over the same number of visits.

### Do I need more traffic or a better website?

If few people visit, more traffic. If people visit and leave, a better page. Analytics answers it: look at visits to the pages that should produce enquiries, then at how many enquiries followed.
