# Is SEO worth it for a small business?

SEO is worth it for a small business when three things are true: people search for what the business sells, a new customer is worth enough to repay months of work, and the business can wait for results. Where any one is false, the money is better spent elsewhere, and each can be checked before a penny is committed.

## The three conditions

SEO pays when all three of these hold.

- People search for it. If nobody types the words for what you sell, there is no search traffic to be had. Demand has to exist first.

- A customer is worth enough. SEO is months of work. A business whose customers each bring a small one-off sale needs far more of them to repay it than a business whose customers return or spend heavily.

- You can wait. Search rewards work done months earlier. A business that needs customers this month needs advertising, and can build search alongside it.

## When it is not worth it

SEO is the wrong spend in four cases.

- The product is new and nobody searches for it yet.

- Customers come entirely by referral, and always will.

- The business needs sales immediately and has no reserve.

- The market is held by national brands, and the business has nothing local or specialised to compete with.

## Check before spending

Each condition can be tested for nothing.

1. Demand. Type what you sell into Google and read the suggestions and the “People also ask” box. Our guide to [keyword research with free tools](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/keyword-research-with-free-tools/) goes further.

2. Competition. Search the main term and look at who appears. Businesses your own size are a contest you can enter.

3. Your starting point. Search Console shows what the site already appears for. A site with impressions and few clicks is close.

4. The value of a customer. Work out what one new customer is worth over a year, and how many would repay the work.

## What to pay for, and what to avoid

Pay for work that is named and measured: an audit, a list of fixes, pages written, a report each month. Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO warns against anyone who promises rankings or claims a special relationship with Google. Our guide to the [questions to ask an SEO agency](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/questions-to-ask-an-seo-agency/) lists what to ask before signing.

## SEO or advertising

The two are not rivals. Advertising buys visits now and stops when the budget does. SEO takes longer and keeps working. Our guide to [SEO or Google Ads first](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/seo-or-google-ads-first/) covers the order that wastes least.

## Questions people ask

### Is it worth paying for SEO services?

Paying for SEO is worth it when customers search for what you sell, each new customer is worth a meaningful sum, and you can wait some months. Pay for named work and measured results, and be wary of anyone who promises a position.

### Can I do SEO myself?

Much of it, yes. Claiming the Business Profile, writing a page for each service, and fixing titles and descriptions need time more than expertise. Technical faults, rebuilds and competitive searches are where help earns its fee.

### How long before SEO pays for itself?

Technical fixes can show within weeks. New pages and competitive searches take months, and the return builds afterwards, because a page that has earned a position keeps bringing visitors without a charge for each one.

## Free competitor gap report

Whether SEO would pay depends on how far behind you are. Name up to three competitors and we measure your site against theirs, then send you the size of the gap and what closing it would involve.

1. Speed and technical health, side by side
2. On-page SEO and site structure
3. The content they are found for and you are not
4. Who holds the searches that matter in your market
5. A prioritised list of what to fix first
