# How to see how much traffic your website gets

Two free Google tools answer the question. Search Console counts the visits that came from Google Search: its Performance report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position. Google Analytics counts visits from every source, once its tag is on the site. Neither shows names: both report visitors as numbers.

## Search Console: visits from Google

The Performance report in Search Console shows four figures, and Google defines each.

- Clicks: the number of times someone clicked through to the site from Google’s results.

- Impressions: how many times the site appeared in results.

- CTR: the clicks divided by the impressions.

- Average position: the average position of the site’s topmost result.

The report opens on the past three months. It also lists the searches themselves, which Analytics does not. Search Console needs no tag on the site, only proof that the site is yours.

## Analytics: visits from everywhere

Google Analytics counts visits from search, social media, advertisements, other websites and people typing the address. It records only from the day its tag is added, so a site without it has no history to read. Our guide to [adding Google Analytics to a website](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/how-to-add-google-analytics-to-your-website/) covers the set-up.

## Why the two figures differ

Search Console’s clicks and Analytics’ sessions will never match, for three reasons.

- Search Console counts Google Search only, and Analytics counts every source.

- Analytics misses visitors who decline cookies or block its tag.

- One counts clicks on a result, and the other counts visits that loaded the tag.

Read each for what it measures. Neither figure is the wrong one.

## Your platform’s own count

Wix, Squarespace and Shopify each show visitor figures in their dashboards. Those counts are made by the platform itself and follow its own definitions, so they differ again. Pick one source for month-to-month comparison and stay with it.

## Which numbers are worth watching

Total visits say little alone. Three figures say more.

- Visits to the pages that sell: service, product and contact pages.

- The searches that bring visitors, from Search Console.

- Enquiries or sales for each hundred visits.

A fall in any of them has a cause that can be found. Our guides to [why website traffic is dropping](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/why-is-my-website-traffic-dropping/) and [a high bounce rate](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/why-is-my-bounce-rate-so-high/) start there.

## Questions people ask

### How can I see how many people visit my website?

Use Google Analytics for visits from every source, and Search Console for visits from Google Search. Website platforms such as Wix, Squarespace and Shopify also have a visitor count in their own dashboards.

### Can I see who visited my website?

Not by name. Analytics reports visitors in aggregate: how many came, from which source, on which device and to which pages. A visitor becomes known only when they enquire, buy or sign up.

### How much traffic should a website get?

No figure fits every business. A business serving one town needs far fewer visits than a shop selling nationally. Measure against your own earlier months, and against the enquiries the visits produce.

## Free competitor gap report

Your own figures show half the picture. Name up to three competitors and we measure their sites and search presence beside yours, then send you the searches they are found for and you are not.

1. Speed and technical health, side by side
2. On-page SEO and site structure
3. The content they are found for and you are not
4. Who holds the searches that matter in your market
5. A prioritised list of what to fix first
