# Google Ads impressions but no clicks: what is wrong

Impressions with no clicks mean the ad is being shown and passed over. Three things cause it: the ad appears for searches it does not answer, it appears too far down to be seen, or its wording gives a searcher no reason to pick it over the ones beside it. The search terms report and the ad's own figures show which.

## 1. Is the ad showing for the right searches?

Open the search terms report and compare what people typed with what the ad says. An ad for boiler repair shown to people searching for boiler prices will be seen and ignored. Loosely matched keywords are the usual cause. Add negative keywords for the searches that do not fit, and tighten the match type. Our guide to [whether Google Ads is wasting your budget](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/is-google-ads-wasting-your-budget/) covers both.

## 2. Is the ad high enough to be seen?

An ad at the foot of the page, or on the second page, collects impressions that hardly anyone sees. The account’s impression share columns show how often the ad reached the top of the page. If it rarely does, the Ad Rank is low, and the remedy is a better Quality Score or a higher bid.

## 3. Does the ad give a reason to click?

Search for your own keyword using the Ad Preview tool, and read your ad beside the others.

- The headline repeats the words the person searched.

- The ad says something specific: a price, a time, an area.

- It differs from the ads beside it.

- The extra links, phone number and location that Google can show with an ad are filled in.

An ad that could belong to any business in the trade gives nobody a reason to choose it.

## 4. Is one ad group trying to do too much?

A single ad cannot match forty different keywords. Split the ad group so that each has a small set of closely related keywords and an ad written for them. The headline can then say exactly what was searched.

## What to change first

Start with the search terms, because excluding the wrong searches raises the click-through rate at once and costs nothing. Then rewrite the ads for the keywords that remain. Position comes last, since a better-matched ad earns a better position by itself. ## Questions people ask

### What is a good click-through rate for Google Ads?

A good rate varies too much by trade and by search to give one figure. The useful comparison is between your own ads and keywords: the ones well below the account's average are the ones to fix or pause.

### Why do my ads get impressions but no clicks?

Usually because the ad is showing for searches it does not match. Read the search terms report: if the searches are not ones your ad answers, the keyword is too loose.

### Does a low click-through rate cost more?

Indirectly. Expected click-through rate is part of Quality Score, and a lower Quality Score means paying more for the same position or not appearing.
