# Why your Google Ads campaign is not spending its budget

A campaign that is not spending is eligible to run and is winning too few auctions. Either too few searches match its keywords and targeting, or its bids are too low to win the ones that do. A new campaign, or one whose bid strategy is still learning, also spends slowly at first. Each cause shows in a different column of the account.

## First, rule out a campaign that is not running

A campaign that spends nothing at all may not be eligible to run. Paused items, disapproved ads and billing problems stop it entirely. Our guide to [why Google Ads are not showing](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/why-are-my-google-ads-not-showing/) covers those. The reasons below apply to a campaign that runs and spends little.

## 1. Too few searches match

Exact match keywords with small search volumes can only spend as much as people search. Google marks the smallest with a “low search volume” status and does not run them. Add related keywords, or loosen the match type with care.

## 2. The bids are too low

A bid below what the auction needs wins nothing. The “Search lost IS (rank)” column shows the share of auctions lost for this reason. Raise the bid, or raise the Quality Score with a more relevant ad and page.

## 3. The targeting is too narrow

A small area, a few hours a day and an audience restriction multiply together. Google’s own advice for campaigns with little traffic is to broaden the geographic and audience settings.

## 4. The bid strategy is limited or learning

An automated strategy with a target that is too strict, such as a very low cost for each conversion, will hold back spend to meet it. Google also reports statuses of learning, limited and misconfigured, during which a campaign may not run well. Open the strategy and read its status.

## 5. The campaign is new

A new campaign’s ads are reviewed before they serve, and an automated strategy then learns for a period. Judge spending after a week or two, not after a day.

## What to change, in order

Loosen one thing at a time, and watch the effect for a few days before the next.

1. Raise bids, or relax the bid strategy’s target.

2. Add keywords close to the ones that work.

3. Widen the area or the schedule.

Read the search terms report as the spending rises, because wider targeting brings worse searches with the better ones. Our guide to [whether Google Ads is wasting your budget](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/is-google-ads-wasting-your-budget/) covers that check.

## Questions people ask

### Why is Google Ads not spending my daily budget?

Because the campaign is entering or winning too few auctions. Check how many searches match its keywords, whether its bids are competitive, how narrow the targeting is, and the status of its bid strategy.

### How long does a new Google Ads campaign take to start spending?

New ads are reviewed before they run, and an automated bid strategy then needs a period of learning. Spending in the first days is often low for both reasons.

### Should I raise my budget if the campaign is not spending?

No. A campaign that cannot spend its present budget will not spend a larger one. Raise bids or widen the targeting first.
