# How to see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics

Google Analytics 4 puts visits from AI assistants in a channel of their own, called AI Assistant, which covers arrivals from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Grok. Two reports show how many visits each assistant sent and which pages they landed on.

## Find the AI Assistant channel

Google Analytics sorts every visit into a channel: Organic Search, Direct, Referral and so on. AI Assistant is one of them.

1. Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.

2. Make sure the table is grouped by the default channel group.

3. Read the AI Assistant row: sessions, engaged sessions and key events.

A site with few visitors may show no such row. Lengthen the date range to ninety days before concluding that assistants send nothing.

## See which assistant sent the visits

The channel is a total. To split it, change the table’s main dimension to Session source. Each assistant appears under its own address, such as `chatgpt.com`, and the search box above the table filters to one of them.

## See which pages they land on

Add Landing page as a second dimension. The pages listed are the ones assistants linked to, which is the closest thing to a list of what they consider worth citing on your site. Pages you expected and do not see are the ones to improve.

## What the numbers miss

Three kinds of activity never reach this report.

- Answers with no click. An assistant that names your business without the reader visiting leaves no trace in Analytics.

- Visits with no referrer. Some apps open links without saying where the visitor came from, and Analytics counts those as Direct.

- Google’s own AI features. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted with Google organic search, by Google’s own definition of the channel.

## What Analytics cannot see at all

Crawlers do not run the Analytics script, so the visits of `OAI-SearchBot` or `PerplexityBot` appear nowhere in it. Those are recorded in the site’s server log, which is the only record of how often assistants read the site, as distinct from how often they send a person.

## Make it a monthly check

Record three figures each month: sessions from the AI Assistant channel, the assistants they came from, and the landing pages. Set them beside the answers themselves, using the routine in [how to check if ChatGPT recommends your business](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/does-chatgpt-recommend-your-business/). Our guide to [what a monthly SEO report should show](https://hadalmedusa.com/guides/what-a-monthly-seo-report-should-show/) covers where these figures sit among the others.

## Questions people ask

### Does Google Analytics show ChatGPT traffic?

Yes. GA4 has a default channel called AI Assistant for visits arriving from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok. The session source shows which assistant each visit came from.

### Are visits from Google's AI Overviews counted as AI traffic?

No. Google's definition of the AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Clicks from those are counted with ordinary Google search, and Search Console reports them within its Web search results.

### Why is my ChatGPT traffic so low?

An assistant answers many questions without the reader needing to click, so visits understate how often a business was named. Treat the figure as a floor, and check the answers themselves as well.

## Free competitor gap report

Traffic from assistants follows from being cited by them. Name up to three competitors and we measure how your site and theirs read to an answer engine, then send you where they are easier to cite.

1. Speed and technical health, side by side
2. On-page SEO and site structure
3. The content they are found for and you are not
4. Who holds the searches that matter in your market
5. A prioritised list of what to fix first
